Certificate of Insurance

A document proving that a party holds valid insurance coverage with specified limits and endorsements.

A Certificate of Insurance (COI) is a document issued by an insurance company or broker that verifies the existence of an insurance policy and summarizes its key terms. In construction, COIs are the primary mechanism for general contractors to verify subcontractor coverage.

A compliant COI should include: the insured's name, policy number, coverage type, effective and expiration dates, coverage limits, any endorsements (additional insured, waiver of subrogation), and the certificate holder's information.
