TRIR Calculator

Calculate your Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) using the OSHA formula. Used by GCs to evaluate subcontractor safety performance during prequalification.

What is TRIR?

The Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR), also called Total Recordable Case Rate (TRCR), measures workplace safety by calculating the number of OSHA-recordable injuries per 200,000 hours worked (equivalent to 100 full-time employees working for one year).

TRIR Formula

TRIR = (Number of Recordable Incidents x 200,000) / Total Hours Worked

Construction Industry TRIR Benchmarks

  • Below 1.5: Excellent safety record
  • 1.5 - 3.0: Around construction industry average
  • 3.0 - 5.0: Above average, review safety programs
  • Above 5.0: High risk, immediate improvements needed

Why TRIR Matters for General Contractors

GCs use TRIR as a key prequalification metric when evaluating subcontractors. A high TRIR can disqualify a sub from bidding on projects, increase insurance premiums, and indicate systemic safety issues.
